Women of Bentstix

Women of Bentstix

Summer is over and pre season training has started, yeeeeeeeeeewwww…..

With the silverware of 2014 and 2015– grand final winners – still shiny and proud in the trophy cabinet the Women of Bentsix Hockey Club are raring and ready to go for the 2016 winter season and build on the success of the last few years.

Once again, we have had some fantastic new players, both experienced and inexperienced, joining our squad. These new players, along with our awesome returning members will be guided throughthe season by our coaches Trent and Kara.

Our coaches will be helping our players develop and grow both individually and within the squad. We have 2 teams competing again this year in the Sydney East Hockey Association Hockey Competion, Divsion 3 and 4.

As like the previous years the Women of Bentstix are looking to have a whole lot of fun playing hockey together over the season. Our ethos, throughout the club, is to be encouraging, play hard, train hard, create a positive and supportive environment and NEVER give up. Our club also runs regular social events throughout the season, playing off the pitch is just as fun as playing off.

With the hockey season running from April to August we welcome players throughout the season. So grab you stick, get down to the pitch and Come Play With Me.

~ Sally Whitney, Captain (division 3)

The history, 2012-2015

Bentstix women’s team, 2013 Minor Premiers and Grand Finalists…how did we get here in only our second season? To answer that you would have to look back to our first season in 2012 when a random bunch of players, both novice and experienced, decided to give it a crack and form the first ever local Bentstix women’s team. Our first game proved to be a little…challenging…with only nine players available, we took a drilling, losing nine-nil. From that first game – where no one knew each other’s names – a lot of fun, laughter, encouragement and hard work (and a full squad!) started to yield results and by the end of the season we had shot up the ladder to be equal third, missing out on finals by just one goal.

That first season laid the foundation for what it means to be part of the Bentstix women’s team. Playing your hardest and being a part of the team on and off the field is what we are about. Our ethos is to be welcoming no matter who you are, be supportive and encouraging no matter what your skill level, to work hard as a team no matter what the score, to be committed to the team not matter how hungover or tired you are, to be competitive no matter who we play, and no matter what, have fun and NEVER GIVE UP.

In 2013 we welcomed new players who have brought a great deal to the team and the club as a whole. We have had a great season this year, playing good hockey, improving as individual players but more importantly improving and playing as a team. Our success came from hard work, commitment and great support from our loved ones, friends, family and fellow club members. Peter and Gemma coached us over the season and they make up an integral part of our success. While we didn’t take home ‘The Granny’, the fun and success we enjoyed across the season was worth all the effort put in. Go Stix!

In 2014 we grew to two women’s teams for the first time and welcomed many new girls to the club. We sparkled in our rainbow socks for the first time and where there are rainbows… there (apparently) must be torrential rain – but nothing would dampen the girls’ spirits from playing hockey!

It was a fantastic year for the development of the teams and the individual skills of players. At the end…? Our division 4 team just missed out on finals but had a cracker of a time, and our division 3 team took out the minor premiership, the major premiership, Best on Ground in the grand final (Nat Stewart), Best and Fairest for ED division 3 (Gemma Hartmann) and Best and Fairest for all of ED competition, Phoenix Medal winner (Gemma Hartmann). What a phenomenal achievement, so very proud.

In 2015 we sparkled again in our rainbow socks as two women’s teams hit the pitch again. There were new faces, new friends and many laughs to be had both on and off the pitch. Our division 4 team just missed out on finals (again!!) and our division 3 team propped up in numbers with many of our div 4 players went on to take home ‘The Granny’ for a second year in a row. It was a truly club effort and another fantastic result for the girls.
